Among the updates and excitement surrounding the new Spartanburg High School being built on the east side, there are also questions about the old school buildings that will be left behind after the project is finished.

The soon-to-be former Spartanburg High School will be taken over by McCracken Middle School students, but reader Jerry Martin told Upstate Lowdown he wanted to know what the plan is for the McCracken Middle School building.

“That’s a long way off,” said Spartanburg School District 7 spokeswoman Sally Gregg.

According to Gregg, plans for McCracken Middle School will not be made until the current Spartanburg High School has been readied for the McCracken students to move into, which, of course, won’t happen until the Spartanburg High students have moved into the new Spartanburg High School. The ultimate decision regarding what will happen to the middle school will fall on the school board, Gregg said.

The new Spartanburg High School is on schedule to be completed in August 2019. The old high school will be renovated during the 2019-20 school year, and then McCracken Middle School students will begin classes there in 2021.
